A Weekend Rail Closure Set to Complicate Travel Through Florence

Travellers heading to or through Florence at the end of January will face notable changes as rail services across a central section of the city are temporarily suspended. From Saturday afternoon on 24 January until Sunday afternoon on 25 January, trains will not operate along a key corridor linking northern and eastern parts of the city. The disruption is connected to the start of works to replace the Ponte al Pino road overpass, a project that directly affects rail movement through Florence.

What is changing across the rail network

During the affected weekend, several parts of the rail network used by travellers will operate under modified conditions:

  • Firenze Rifredi – Firenze Campo di Marte: rail services suspended from 3 pm Saturday to 3 pm Sunday
  • Firenze Santa Maria Novella: additional track works throughout 24 and 25 January, affecting arrivals and departures
  • High-speed services: limited to one train per hour in and out of Florence
  • Local connections: replacement bus services running between affected stations

These changes go beyond a simple timetable adjustment. Florence functions as a major interchange for visitors moving between northern and southern Italy, as well as for day trips across Tuscany. The suspension increases the likelihood of longer journeys, indirect routes, and missed connections, particularly for those unfamiliar with the city or travelling with tight schedules.

Travelling through Florence during the affected weekend

To make the journey smoother, travellers should take a few practical steps and consider their options in advance:

  • Check updated timetables shortly before travelling
  • Allow extra time for transfers and onward connections
  • Be ready to use bus links between stations if needed
  • Adjust travel times if flexibility is possible
  • Choose routes that limit station changes during the affected period

This news is less about construction work and more about planning wisely. While the works should improve movement around Florence over time, they temporarily make already busy travel days more demanding, especially for those moving through the city on tight schedules. Travellers with fixed plans or limited time will need to think ahead and stay flexible. Those who prepare in advance are more likely to avoid delays turning into missed connections or unnecessary stress.
