Starting Sunday, August 4th, First Glasgow, the city's main bus operator, will implement changes to selected fare prices. These changes will impact popular tickets such as Two-Trip, FirstWeek, and First4Week tickets, frequently used by both residents and visitors.

Despite keeping fares stable for the past 16 months, First Glasgow has now been compelled to adjust prices due to rising operational costs. Expenses related to fuel, energy, parts, and labor have increased significantly, making it necessary to revise fares. Consequently, the Adult Two-Trip City/Local ticket will rise from £5 to £5.20, the Adult FirstWeek City/Local ticket will increase from £20.40 to £22.50, and the Adult First4Week City/Local ticket will jump from £61.80 to £70.

In addition to these changes, adjustments will be made to Flexible Day Ticket Bundles, First Unlimited, and other selected fares that were not increased during April's annual review. In contrast, Single and FirstDay tickets will maintain their current prices, providing some stability for less frequent travelers.

First Glasgow has invested significantly in its network over the last year, leading to notable improvements in service punctuality and reliability. This progress is largely attributed to the introduction of an AI-driven timetable scheduling platform, which has optimized service delivery across Greater Glasgow.

The fare increases are crucial for First Glasgow to continue offering high-quality and expansive services. Graeme Macfarlan, Commercial Director for First Bus Scotland, emphasized that while the company previously absorbed rising costs to benefit customers, this approach has become unsustainable. The fare adjustments are designed to be as minimal as possible, ensuring a range of ticket options to suit various travel needs.

Additionally, inflation in the UK has been steadily increasing, with the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rising by 2.0% over the past year. This general rise in prices affects the cost of living for travelers, making fare adjustments by transport operators like First Glasgow more understandable. As operational costs climb, fare increases help maintain the quality and reliability of public transportation services, which are essential for both residents and visitors exploring the city.

Despite the fare increases, bus travel remains one of the most affordable, convenient, and sustainable ways to get around Glasgow. First Glasgow’s ongoing investments in new electric buses and advanced on-board technology aim to enhance passenger comfort and reduce environmental impact, reaffirming the company’s commitment to improving the overall travel experience.
