Warwickshire Enhances Early Morning Travel for Disabled Residents

Warwickshire County Council has announced an exciting two-year extension of free weekday travel before 9 am for disabled residents holding bus passes. Approved on June 13, this initiative aims to enhance the travel experience for disabled individuals, ensuring they have greater access to essential services and opportunities across the region.

The successful initial trial, conducted from August 2023 to February 2024, saw over 12,400 early morning trips made by disabled pass holders. This extension will allow even more residents to benefit from flexible travel options, particularly those needing to attend early medical appointments or young people using public transport for their education and training.

Councillor Jan Matecki, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning, emphasized the importance of accessible travel. "Our goal is to ensure everyone can travel independently. This extension has proven vital in helping disabled people access essential services and opportunities throughout the day," Matecki stated. The council's commitment to improving travel accessibility reflects a broader effort to create a more inclusive community.

With an estimated annual cost of approximately £40,000, the extended trial will provide the council with valuable data on long-term ridership patterns and social inclusion. This information will be crucial in assessing future budget allocations and exploring additional travel concessions.

Feedback from the initial trial was overwhelmingly positive. One resident shared, "I often have hospital appointments that require travel before 9 am. Being able to use my bus pass is a financial godsend." Such testimonials highlight the significant impact of the initiative on the daily lives of disabled travelers.

Warwickshire County Council will continue collaborating with local bus operators and disability groups to ensure the extended trial runs smoothly. Current pass holders will be notified of this extension in June and July 2024, ensuring they can continue to enjoy the benefits of early morning travel.
