TSA Intensifies Firearm Screening at Raleigh-Durham International Airport

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is experiencing an uptick in the detection of firearms at security checkpoints, with 33 incidents recorded in the first four months of 2024. This surge aligns with a rise in passenger traffic, which is anticipated to reach record levels this summer.

TSA officers at RDU have a critical protocol when a firearm appears on the X-ray screen: they promptly alert airport police, who manage the situation by safely removing the firearm and interacting with the passenger involved. The vast majority of these incidents involve loaded firearms, increasing the gravity of these security breaches.

Jennifer Gordon, TSA’s Federal Security Director at RDU, emphasizes the importance of passenger vigilance, urging gun owners to check their carry-on luggage thoroughly to prevent bringing firearms to the airport. This advisory comes in light of last year's total of 76 firearm detections, highlighting a persistent challenge in airport security.

Passengers found with firearms at checkpoints face severe consequences, including hefty fines ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 and the loss of TSA PreCheck privileges, irrespective of concealed carry permits. The TSA has detailed guidelines for traveling with firearms, chiefly that they should be transported unloaded in checked baggage, secured in a locked case, and declared during check-in.
