Scotland’s rail network is preparing for potential travel disruption as Storm Floris is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall between 6am on Monday, 4 August, and 6am on Tuesday, 5 August. The Met Office has issued an official weather warning for several parts of the country, with rail operators warning of possible service changes during this period. Passengers are advised to expect alterations or delays as safety measures are put in place.

Train services could face slower running speeds or temporary suspensions in areas most affected by the storm. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph are likely across much of Scotland, with exposed coastal and highland regions facing stronger winds of up to 70 mph. The expected conditions raise the risk of fallen trees or debris blocking tracks, which could lead to sudden timetable changes or partial route closures for safety reasons.

We know Storm Floris is likely to bring unseasonably strong winds and disruption and we’re working hard behind the scenes to make sure we’re ready. Our priority is keeping passengers and our staff safe. Our teams are already carrying out extra inspections and putting plans in place, including extra support. That work will continue throughout the storm, with staff on standby to respond quickly to any damage.
Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland

The weather alert applies to several areas of Scotland, stretching from inland regions to coastal zones and further north, where rail tracks face a higher risk of being affected by powerful winds and heavy downpours. Network Rail has sent out extra teams to double-check tracks and equipment before the storm hits, while ScotRail says backup crews will be on hand to step in fast if any problems arise. Travellers are being urged to monitor updates closely, as changes may be introduced at short notice to keep journeys safe.

People planning to travel during this period are advised to get their journeys organised ahead of time. Key recommendations include:

  • Try to rearrange your travel plans where you can and give yourself some extra time for the trip.
  • Check live train updates before departure to stay informed about changes.
  • Get ready for possible cancellations by knowing other routes you can take or different transport options you can use.
  • Be aware that delays on rail lines may affect onward connections, including airport links and longer-distance services.

For passengers, this weather alert is a reminder of how quickly severe conditions can impact Scotland’s transport network. Storm Floris shows why it’s crucial to keep up with travel updates and stay ready to adjust your plans when the weather turns rough. Even though rail operators try to keep trains running where they can, keeping people safe comes first, so travel plans might still change without warning. Travellers should remain cautious and prepared for possible delays until conditions improve.
