South-central Europe is facing severe weather conditions, with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall forecasted for Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia until at least June 4. This adverse weather is expected to disrupt transportation, businesses, and utility services significantly across the affected regions.

Authorities have issued several warnings as of May 20 to alert the public. For June 3, orange thunderstorm and heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for northeastern and southern Croatia, southern and northwestern Hungary, and central and eastern Slovenia. Additionally, yellow warnings are in place for the rest of Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia, continuing into June 4 for Hungary and Slovenia.

The anticipated severe weather includes heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and hail, posing a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas and urban regions with poor drainage systems. Flash flooding is likely near rivers and creeks, and landslides are a concern in mountainous regions. Authorities may issue evacuation orders for flood-prone areas, and disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible if utility networks are impacted. Floodwaters could render bridges, railways, and roads impassable, severely affecting travel.

Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia are popular tourist destinations, known for their cultural heritage, landscapes, and vibrant cities. Tourism is a significant part of their economies, attracting millions of visitors annually. The severe weather is likely to impact travel plans, with potential flight delays, cancellations, and hazardous conditions deterring visitors. Mandatory evacuations and business disruptions may also affect accommodations and services for tourists.

Travel agencies and tour operators are likely to see a surge in cancellations and rescheduling requests from concerned tourists. Hotels, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses may suffer financial losses due to reduced visitor numbers and operational disruptions caused by flooding and severe weather.

The travel industry in these countries is already recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the upcoming severe weather presents an additional challenge. Businesses in the tourism sector may need to implement contingency plans, offer flexible cancellation policies, and ensure safety measures are in place. Authorities and tourism boards are expected to issue regular updates to keep travelers informed about weather conditions and potential disruptions.

Despite these challenges, the tourism industry in Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia has shown resilience in the past. With effective management and support, the travel industry is expected to recover once the severe weather subsides.
