US Airlines Ground Humanoid Robots

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have joined Southwest in banning humanoid and animal-like robots from aircraft cabins and checked baggage. The policies target machines designed to imitate people or animals in appearance, size, movement or behaviour. Airlines point to battery, storage and operational risks as larger robotic companions begin moving beyond laboratories and industrial sites into more public settings.

United introduced its restriction as a precaution rather than in response to an incident on one of its flights. Southwest acted after a passenger travelled with a humanoid robot earlier this year. Delta’s policy also exempts standard toy robots that fit approved storage spaces. Under FAA guidance, most lithium-ion batteries are limited to 100Wh, while larger batteries require approval or are prohibited.
Most holidaymakers will see little change, since ordinary robotic toys and smaller automated devices can still travel when they meet baggage rules. The restrictions matter more to researchers, exhibitors and engineers carrying machines to conferences, university demonstrations or technology events. They may need specialist freight services, locally sourced equipment or separate battery arrangements instead of checking a robot or buying a passenger seat.
The policies close a gap before large companion robots become common travel items. A separate ticket no longer makes a human-shaped machine acceptable cabin baggage on these airlines. Anyone moving specialist robotics equipment should obtain written approval before booking and check the battery capacity, dimensions and transport method. Discovering the restriction at the airport could leave an expensive machine behind with few immediate alternatives.
