Lake Brenets, a scenic waterway on the Swiss-French border, has become unnavigable after months of low rainfall and three successive heatwaves. The lake, usually busy with swimmers, campers, canoeists and sightseeing boats in summer, is now reduced to a narrow strip of brown water. Dozens of vessels are stranded on exposed mud, while local boat operators have halted trips during their busiest season.

What Has Happened at Lake Brenets

  • Location: Lake Brenets on the Swiss-French border
  • Current status: Unnavigable for more than a week
  • Water level: More than 9 metres below average
  • Daily decline: Around 22 centimetres
  • Cause: Prolonged drought and three successive heatwaves
  • Rainfall: About half the usual amount since April
  • Tourism impact: Boat services suspended and staff laid off
  • Nearby waterfall: Saut du Doubs nearly dry
  • Outlook: Below-normal rainfall forecast until mid-August

Three companies normally carry thousands of visitors across the lake each summer, but the 2026 season has largely stopped. Yvan Durig, owner of the Société de Navigation des Brenets, has already laid off his team and expects a difficult financial year. MeteoSwiss says the current drought is comparable with severe Swiss dry spells recorded in 1976, 2003 and 2018 across the country.

Visitors who still travel to Les Brenets can view the changed landscape from Jürgensen Tower, a belvedere overlooking the lake and Doubs Valley. The usual sightseeing cruise towards Saut du Doubs is unavailable, and the waterfall itself has nearly dried up. Nearby Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds offer UNESCO-listed watchmaking townscapes and museums, providing alternatives that do not depend on lake conditions.

Anyone planning a summer stop at Lake Brenets should treat boat cruises, canoeing and the waterfall as unavailable unless local operators confirm otherwise. The village and surrounding viewpoints remain visitable, but the experience is no longer the one shown in older travel photographs. Bookings built around the lake need a backup plan, particularly while rainfall remains scarce and water levels continue to fall.
