ScotRail Expands Train Services for Glasgow Summer Sessions Concerts

Glasgow's Summer Sessions festival continued this week with several major headline concerts expected to attract crowds of up to thirty-five thousand people each evening at Bellahouston Park. To support the increased demand, ScotRail introduced additional train capacity and revised evening services for the remaining performances, including shows by Alanis Morissette, Pitbull, Kings of Leon and My Chemical Romance. The temporary transport plan is intended to improve passenger movement before and after each event.
Extra carriages were added to Paisley Canal trains, while dedicated shuttle services between Dumbreck and Glasgow Central were scheduled after every concert to handle the late-night rush. From ten o'clock each evening, regular trains between Glasgow Central and Paisley Canal were replaced by buses, allowing more rail services to operate closer to the festival site, although replacement buses did not serve Dumbreck or Corkerhill because of local road restrictions.
"Planning ahead, allowing a little extra time for travel, and buying your return ticket before you board will all help make your journey easier. When the concerts finish, we'd also ask customers to be considerate of the local community as they make their way back to the station."
Planning Your Journey to the Festival
The transport changes are particularly important because Bellahouston Park is one of Glasgow's busiest outdoor concert venues and is located close to several key rail connections. Travellers heading to the festival commonly use the following routes:
- Glasgow Central to Dumbreck, the closest rail station to the concert venue.
- Paisley Canal services, which received additional carriages during the festival period.
- Late-night shuttle trains between Dumbreck and Glasgow Central, introduced after each concert to manage departing crowds.
These temporary changes are intended to move thousands of passengers away from the venue more efficiently while reducing congestion at the busiest stations.
Many visitors travelling from elsewhere in Scotland can reach Glasgow Central directly before transferring to services serving the Bellahouston area. Those arriving from cities such as Edinburgh, Stirling, Dundee or Aberdeen are advised to check departure times before travelling and purchase return tickets in advance to avoid delays. ScotRail also warned that managed queuing systems may operate at Glasgow Central before concerts and at Dumbreck afterwards, with additional staff available to assist passengers throughout the busiest periods.
For travellers planning to attend the remaining Summer Sessions concerts, the temporary rail timetable means journeys will differ from normal evening travel arrangements. Checking transport updates before leaving, allowing extra time and understanding where replacement buses and shuttle trains operate can help avoid unnecessary disruption. While the concerts remain the main attraction, careful planning is likely to make the trip to and from Bellahouston Park smoother for both local residents and visitors travelling to Glasgow for the festival.
