New Bus Lane to Improve Travel in Exeter

A new contraflow bus lane in Exeter aims to make public transport more efficient and reduce travel times. The construction will involve night-time road closures and promises to enhance the overall travel experience upon completion.

Following a public consultation last summer, the New North Road scheme was approved by the Cabinet in October 2023. This initiative is part of Devon's broader Bus Service Improvement Plan, aimed at upgrading public transport across the county.

The new bus lane will be built on New North Road, between John Lewis and Waterstones in Exeter City Centre. The existing contraflow cycle lane will be widened to accommodate buses, bicycles, and emergency vehicles.

This new route will create a direct path for buses from New North Road to Sidwell Street, bypassing the longer detour through Longbrook Street and York Road. The result is a 0.5-kilometer shorter route, reducing journey times and making travel more straightforward for visitors and residents alike.

Construction is expected to take approximately three weeks. Night-time closures are scheduled from 7pm to 6am on the following dates: Monday, June 24 to Friday, June 28, and Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12. The cycle lane will also be closed for the duration of the project, from June 24 to July 12.

These improvements are designed to make public transport in Exeter more efficient, which could be particularly beneficial for travelers relying on buses to navigate the city.
