East Midlands Travel Alert: June Railway Upgrades to Affect Weekend Journeys

Travel enthusiasts planning trips through the East Midlands this June should be aware of significant railway upgrades that will impact weekend journeys between Northamptonshire, London, Leicester, and Peterborough.

On Sunday, June 23, engineering teams will upgrade the signalling system on the Midland Main Line between London St Pancras and Wellingborough. This essential work will alter train services, affecting travel plans for those exploring these regions. Additionally, further work in central London will disrupt Thameslink services between St Pancras and London Bridge, as well as between St Pancras and Sutton/Wimbledon.

For travelers venturing between Leicester and Peterborough, new track installation will take place over the weekends of June 22-23 and 29-30. During this period, buses will replace CrossCountry trains to Melton Mowbray, Oakham, and Stamford, potentially extending travel times and altering itineraries.

Mark Budden, route director for Network Rail’s East Midlands route, highlighted the significance of the upgrades for maintaining safe and reliable services. "The signalling system upgrade is a technically complex project, necessitating the suspension of train operations in the affected areas. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause. Travelers should plan ahead and check for updates to ensure a smooth journey."

Philippa Cresswell, customer service director for East Midlands Railway, emphasized the importance of advance planning. "We urge travelers heading to or from London on June 23 to check journey updates on the EMR website. While EMR services will operate where possible, expect longer travel times with rail replacement buses and amended timetables. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we undertake this vital work, which will ultimately lead to more reliable journeys."

Jenny Saunders, customer services director for Thameslink, also expressed gratitude for passengers' understanding. "Replacement buses have been arranged to assist travelers, but please allocate extra time for your journey, especially if catching a flight at Luton Airport. Always double-check your schedule before departure."
