In mid-September, Amsterdam provides an exceptional opportunity for visitors to discover its hidden treasures. On September 13 and 14, 50 historic landmarks across the city will open for free, offering access to places normally closed to the public. From the elegant glass dome on Leidsestraat to creative studios at NDSM, a family-run pickling factory, and a working pumping station, travelers can discover a new side of the city rarely seen by outsiders.

This 39th edition of Open Monumentendag is especially notable as it coincides with Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary. On Sunday, guests can immerse themselves in live performances, themed treasure hunts, guided night tours, and musical performances taking place in historic buildings. This program transforms the event into a city festival that highlights art, creativity, and cultural heritage. It provides a captivating view of Amsterdam’s history, current cultural scene, and the ongoing impact the city has on contemporary life.

The weekend provides a rare chance to explore locations typically off-limits, including industrial docks, underground tunnels, and architectural monuments viewed only from the outside. Open Monumentendag reveals Amsterdam’s many historical layers, showing how the city has grown socially, technologically, and artistically throughout the centuries. Visitors develop a deeper understanding of how Amsterdam’s enduring traditions merge with modern innovations, forming a city celebrated for its unique and recognizable character.

While touring Amsterdam’s historic landmarks, visitors are able to participate in the culminating festivities of the city’s 750th anniversary. Starting October 24, the Verhalenfestival welcomes visitors to enjoy engaging local stories at the public library (OBA), while De Kring displays 750 watercolor paintings of Amsterdam’s well-known bollards. On October 27, Dam Square will host a 75-meter birthday cake with 7,500 slices served at 7:50 a.m., followed by the Nationale Viering concert featuring Kris Kross Amsterdam, Maan, and Wibi Soerjadi.

Open Monumentendag is more than a history event; it is a vivid celebration of Amsterdam’s living heritage and character. This shows that cultural sites are dynamic places that continue to shape and reflect the character of a city. Over the weekend, visitors have the opportunity to discover hidden corners, learn interesting local stories, and immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of a city where historical charm and modern life combine to create an unforgettable experience for those seeking both culture and adventure.
