Mount Olympus and D-Day Beaches Gain UNESCO Status
UNESCO has added Mount Olympus in Greece and the Normandy beaches linked to the Allied landings of 6 June 1944, known as D-Day, to its World Heritage List. Japan’s ancient capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara and South Sudan’s Boma–Badingilo wildlife landscape were also included. The decisions were announced during the World Heritage Committee meeting in Busan, South Korea.

Mount Olympus was listed for both its natural importance and its role in Greek mythology, while Normandy’s designation covers five landing beaches and Pointe du Hoc along roughly 80 kilometres of coast. Japan’s entry includes 19 archaeological sites linked to the early capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara. South Sudan’s first World Heritage property protects one of the planet’s largest terrestrial mammal migrations.
The listings give visitors more reason to look beyond the best-known stops. In Greece, routes around the Enipeas Gorge and the Mytikas–Stefani peaks bring mythology and mountain scenery together. Normandy visitors can link Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches with Pointe du Hoc and the American Cemetery. In Japan, the archaeological sites lie south of Nara, within reach of Kyoto and Osaka.
World Heritage status will not change access overnight, but it brings stronger conservation duties and greater international attention. Mount Olympus may attract more visitors after Greece’s long campaign, while Normandy’s memorial landscape could draw greater interest outside major anniversary years. Better interpretation and preservation may follow, although fragile mountain paths, archaeological remains and wildlife habitats could also require tighter visitor controls.
