The Egypt Passport Rule Catching Families at the Gate
British families heading to Egypt are being warned to check passport validity before travelling after a holidaymaker was refused boarding at Gatwick. Egypt requires British passports to expire at least six months after the date of arrival and contain a blank page. Online check-in does not confirm that documents meet entry rules, so airlines can still stop passengers at the gate.

A Kent mother and her two children missed a £6,500 holiday to Hurghada after staff found that her nine-year-old daughter’s passport did not have enough validity remaining. The document was due to expire on 4 January 2027, but the family’s July arrival left less than the required six months. EasyJet said customers remain responsible for carrying valid documents for the journey.
Visa rules depend on where the trip is based. British visitors flying into Sharm El-Sheikh can stay for up to 15 days in Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba using a free entry permission stamp. A visa is required for longer stays or travel beyond those resorts, including Hurghada, Cairo and Luxor. Tourist visas cost $30 on arrival at approved airports.
The rule does not make Egypt harder to visit, but it leaves little room for last-minute fixes. Passport validity should be checked before paying for flights, hotels or packages, particularly for children whose documents expire sooner than adult passports. Anyone applying online for an Egyptian e-visa must submit the application at least seven days before departure and carry a printed copy on arrival.
