Deutsche Bahn is preparing to prohibit alcohol consumption across its entire station network, changing a familiar part of rail travel in Germany. The measure will cover station areas managed by the operator, with the stated aim of reducing violence and rubbish. Travellers will still be able to buy, carry and drink alcohol in certain situations, so the policy is narrower than a complete ban across Germany’s railways.

How the Station Ban Will Roll Out

  • Operator: Deutsche Bahn
  • Coverage: All 5,400 DB stations across Germany
  • Status: Phased implementation is already under way
  • Full rollout: By 15 October 2026
  • Already covered: 30 stations, including Cologne, Hamburg and Munich
  • Next phase: Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Kiel and Braunschweig on 1 September
  • Legal basis: Deutsche Bahn’s house rules
  • Enforcement: Removal from the station, followed by a premises ban for repeat breaches

Bars and restaurants inside stations are exempt, and unopened bottles or cans may still be carried in luggage or shopping bags. The rule does not extend to trains, where drinking remains permitted and alcohol continues to be sold in dining cars on many long-distance services. Anyone caught drinking in a prohibited station area may be told to leave, while repeat breaches can lead to a station ban.

The change will be most noticeable during long connections and evening departures at major hubs including Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich. Visitors can still drink inside a station restaurant, buy sealed alcohol for later, or use on-board catering where available. What disappears is drinking in general waiting areas. Anyone carrying beer or wine for a picnic, festival or overnight service should keep it closed until leaving the station or boarding.

The rule changes station etiquette rather than the wider rail journey. A beer on the platform will no longer be allowed, but carrying a bottle home or ordering wine with a meal is still permitted. Because the rollout is phased, signs and local announcements may differ until mid-October. After the national deadline, the clearest approach is to treat every DB station as alcohol-free outside its bars and restaurants.
