London Charing Cross and Waterloo East have closed for a major railway upgrade, forcing Southeastern passengers to use other central London terminals. Services are still running into the capital, but many journeys now end at Victoria, Cannon Street, Blackfriars or London Bridge. Timetables, frequencies and last trains have changed across the network, so regular routes may take longer or require an extra connection.

Dates and Alternative Routes

  • Stations closed: London Charing Cross and Waterloo East
  • Main closure: 26 July–16 August 2026
  • Project value: £20 million
  • Alternative terminals: Victoria, Cannon Street, Blackfriars and London Bridge
  • Ticket acceptance: Selected Underground, Thameslink, Southern and London bus routes
  • Further closures: 22–23 August and 10–11 October
  • Refunds: Available for eligible extra travel charges with proof of payment
“Recent faults have caused over 21,000 minutes (350 hours) of delays to customers. Without intervention, faults and delays would continue to increase, causing more frustration for commuters."
Southeastern Railway

The programme includes 1,800 metres of replacement track, 16 new sets of switches and crossings, drainage improvements at Waterloo East and rebuilt platform sections at Charing Cross. Engineers will also repair the pedestrian link to London Waterloo and strengthen the 175-year-old Hungerford Bridge. The existing track dates back to 1990, and the extended closure avoids spreading the work across around 60 weekends.

Central London remains reachable throughout the closure, including the South Bank, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square and the West End. London Bridge offers onward Tube connections towards Waterloo and Charing Cross, while Blackfriars, Cannon Street and Victoria provide alternatives for attractions, hotels and evening plans. Visitors should favour routes with fewer changes, even when journey planners suggest a slightly faster but more complicated option.

The disruption matters beyond the daily commute, particularly for visitors arriving from Kent or south-east London for theatre trips, events and late departures. Checking the return journey is just as important as planning the outward leg, because final trains now leave from different terminals and at revised times. Further weekend closures will follow, so normal service will not return permanently when the main work ends.
