Amsterdam Introduces Free Public Transport for Children
Starting July 20, children aged 4 to 11 in Amsterdam and Weesp will be able to travel for free on public transport for six months. This initiative, which runs until January 5, allows children to ride buses, trams, and metros at no cost when accompanied by an adult. For tourists, this provides a great opportunity to explore the city’s attractions without worrying about transportation costs for kids.
Families can save on travel costs for visits to family, parks, or cultural sites around the city. The offer is valid every day between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM, extending through the Christmas holidays.
Parents and guardians must apply for a personal OV-chipkaart for each child to benefit from the free travel offer. The OV-chipkaart costs €7.50. It will be delivered within five days. Once received, free travel can be activated for each child. For tourists, an OV-chipkaart can also be used to travel around the city, offering a hassle-free way to experience Amsterdam’s public transport system.
The free travel offer covers all GVB-operated buses, trams, and metros. Each child must be accompanied by at least one adult, making it convenient for families and tourists to travel together.
Last year, 17,000 children participated in a similar campaign, making nearly a million trips across Amsterdam. This year’s initiative is expected to help even more families and tourists discover the city’s vibrant neighborhoods and famous landmarks.
