A 1,000-Mile Eco-Friendly Train Journey: A Family's Adventure to Slovenia

A family embarked on an ambitious 1,000-mile train journey from London to Ljubljana, Slovenia, aiming to minimize their carbon footprint and enjoy the scenic route. The trip was not without its challenges, but it offered a unique experience.

The journey began in London, where they boarded the Eurostar to Brussels, quickly realizing the complexities of traveling with tight schedules. Despite minor setbacks, such as crowded trains and limited food options, the scenic views across Belgium and Germany made the effort worthwhile.

Crossing Germany, the picturesque landscapes and quaint towns provided a charming contrast to the usual aerial view from a plane. The journey continued smoothly to Munich, where the family spent a delightful day exploring the city, including a visit to the Gothic Frauenkirche cathedral and the bustling Viktualienmarkt.

After a night at the luxurious Charles Hotel, the family resumed their journey to Villach, Austria. The train ride offered breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and Alpine chalets, despite some discomfort due to the lack of a dining car. Upon reaching Villach, they quickly transferred to another train, making it to Lake Bled in Slovenia, a place of fairy-tale beauty with its serene lake and historic castle.

The final leg of their journey took them to Ljubljana, where they stayed at the InterContinental Ljubljana. The city charmed them with its pedestrian-friendly streets, stunning architecture by Jože Plečnik, and captivating historical sites like Ljubljana Castle. A visit to the Postojna Cave Park added an extra layer of wonder to their trip.

Though they faced a few logistical hurdles, the experience of traveling overland was enriching. However, for the return journey, the family opted for the convenience of flying, appreciating the balance between adventure and practicality.
