Why Manchester Airport Is Confiscating Yoghurt and Toy Guns
Manchester Airport has urged summer holidaymakers to check hand-luggage rules after security officers removed a surprising mix of everyday items during one morning at Terminal 2. The haul included cosmetics, food, tools, toy weapons and sports equipment. Airport managers said bags requiring manual searches can slow security queues, even when passengers have packed prohibited items by mistake rather than trying to break the rules.

In the confiscated batch were 24 packs of cosmetics, seven drinks bottles, seven food items, 12 pairs of scissors, seven corkscrews, four knives and ten toy guns or firearm lookalikes. Yoghurt, snow globes and squishy toys can all fall under liquid rules because their contents can be poured, spread or sprayed. A baseball bat and leg massager were also removed as potential weapons.
Manchester’s 3D scanners mean liquids under 100ml and large electronics can remain inside bags, reducing the usual unpacking at security. Travellers can also place belts, watches and pocket contents inside hand luggage before putting it in the tray. Packing restricted items in hold luggage where allowed can prevent losing holiday purchases, children’s toys or toiletries and help families reach the departure lounge without an avoidable bag search.
The warning matters most during the school holiday rush, when one badly packed bag can hold up everyone behind it. The 100ml rule still applies at Manchester despite the newer scanners, so passengers should check container size rather than how much product is left. A half-empty 200ml bottle will still fail. Reviewing the airport’s security list before leaving home is quicker than negotiating with staff beside the trays.
