Rail services through Verona will be temporarily suspended on Sunday 15 June due to the removal of two unexploded World War II bombs found near major railway intersections. The operation, authorized by the Verona Prefecture, is scheduled between 8:00 AM and approximately 1:00 PM. During this period, all train traffic will be halted in the Verona Parona and Bivio Santa Lucia areas to allow military specialists to carry out disposal work under safe conditions.

The suspension will affect several important train routes. The following train routes will be affected by the suspension:

  • Verona to Brennero
  • Verona to Mantua
  • Verona to Rovigo
  • Verona to Bologna

Both regional and long-distance services will experience delays, rerouting, or cancellations. Rail infrastructure manager RFI has stated that train circulation will resume only once the disposal operation is successfully completed. Travelers are advised to check real-time updates through railway websites, mobile apps, or at station information desks for assistance in rebooking or planning alternative routes.

This disruption could make it harder for travelers to reach some of the area’s most popular destinations. Day trips to Borghetto sul Mincio, a quaint village known for its lovely riverside views and old watermills, might experience some delays. There could be some restrictions on reaching Lake Garda, well-known for its stunning lakefront and activities, which might affect travelers. The medieval town of Soave, renowned for its ancient castle and surrounding vineyards, may become less accessible from Verona during the suspension.

Travelers heading further afield will also face potential complications. The route to Valpolicella, a well-known wine-producing region with beautiful landscapes, might require alternative transport options. Trips to the Dolomiti di Brenta mountain range, popular for hiking and nature exploration, could see increased travel times. The ability to visit Lessinia Regional Nature Park, famous for its natural beauty and trails, might be restricted, posing problems for nature enthusiasts.

Although the closure is temporary, it highlights how historical wartime remnants continue to impact present-day travel infrastructure. Travelers who aren’t familiar with the rail network in northern Italy are encouraged to organize their journeys ahead of time and be ready to adjust routes if needed to prevent delays. Although the disruption may cause some inconvenience, removing the wartime explosives is a necessary step toward improving safety for all travellers in the area.
