Flights across Belgium were brought to a halt on Tuesday evening after several drones were spotted near major airports. Around 8 p.m. local time, flights at Brussels and Liège airports were suspended after unidentified drones entered restricted airspace. Authorities briefly reopened Brussels Airport before shutting it again as more sightings were reported. Multiple flights were diverted to Ostend, Maastricht, and Eindhoven airports, leaving passengers stranded and waiting for updates late into the night.

Belgium’s Defence Ministry confirmed that drones had also been detected near Kleine-Brogel Air Base, a key NATO site close to the Dutch border. Defence Minister Theo Francken described the activity as "coordinated," suggesting a deliberate intrusion rather than an accident. Intelligence officials are investigating whether the drones were launched from outside Belgium. Some European analysts have linked the incidents to possible Russian reconnaissance, following similar drone sightings near other NATO facilities.

The event showed how easily modern air travel can be affected by unexpected security threats. Passengers at Brussels Airport had to wait overnight while officials made sure everyone was safe. There were temporary beds set up in terminals, and the customer service desks were very busy. The airlines provided alternative transportation for several passengers, directing them to different airports in Belgium and the Netherlands. The incident underscored the growing challenges of maintaining airport security as drone activity continues to increase across Europe.

Experts advise travelers to take a few straightforward precautions to be ready for such scenarios. Having key items like phone chargers, medications, and travel documents in your carry-on bag can help you manage delays more comfortably. Choosing flexible ticket options or taking out insurance to cover potential costs in the event of a flight cancellation for safety reasons can help reduce the stress of sudden schedule changes. Getting information through airline apps or official airport announcements helps passengers act quickly and minimize unnecessary waiting in terminals during major disruptions.

The intrusion of Belgian drones is a wake-up call for travelers around the world. Air travel is now affected not only by weather conditions and technical problems. Geopolitical tensions and new technologies also play an important role. As governments step up their efforts to control people and stop drones, passengers need to stay informed and be prepared to change their plans. In modern aviation, readiness for unforeseen events has become essential, forming a fundamental part of safe and responsible air travel.
