Storm Agneta Floods Rhodes as Tourists Told to Stay Indoors

Storm Agneta has flooded roads on the Greek holiday island of Rhodes, prompting authorities to tell residents and visitors to avoid unnecessary journeys on Monday, 2 November. Heavy rain swept through parts of the island, particularly around Archangelos, where vehicles were reportedly carried away by floodwater. Greece’s weather service raised its warning for the Dodecanese to red, with more storms expected on Tuesday.
What Rhodes Visitors Should Do Now
- Stay inside: Rhodes municipality advises against non-essential journeys.
- Closed roads: Avoid the Haraki crossing, Reni in Stegna and the old Archangelos–Malona road near Aithonas.
- Airport: Check your flight with your airline and confirm that your transfer can reach the terminal.
- Floodwater: Never cross submerged roads, streams or coastal crossings.
- Accommodation: Ask about water supply, particularly in Kolymbia and Archangelos.
- Emergency: Dial 112 if you are in danger.
The island received emergency telephone warnings in the early hours of Monday as torrential rain caused flooding around Archangelos and nearby communities. Local media reported water entering homes and shops, with some people sheltering on rooftops. Municipal crews remain on alert and are responding to flood-related damage. The updated Greek weather bulletin forecasts an orange warning for the Dodecanese on Tuesday, with heavy showers possible until the afternoon.
Rhodes Airport has not announced a general closure, although individual flight disruptions remain possible. That does not guarantee individual flights or airport transfers will run normally. Water-supply problems also affected Kremasti, parts of Archangelos and a section of Kolymbia between Marianna Palace Hotel and Casa Cook Rhodes. Repairs were underway, with no confirmed restoration times.
A flooded road could prevent passengers reaching the airport even when their flight is operating, so confirm transport arrangements before leaving accommodation. If an airline cancels a flight departing Rhodes, EU rules give passengers a choice of refund or rerouting, plus assistance while waiting. Cash compensation may not apply if the airline proves severe weather made the cancellation unavoidable, but refund, rerouting and care rights remain.
