With its vast landscapes and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities, Wyoming is a leading force in the nation's outdoor recreation economy. Taking in more than $2 billion in 2023 alone, the state has become the nation's fourth-fastest growing outdoor recreation economy.

Wyoming's potential extends far beyond its current accomplishments. The creation of a Trust Fund for outdoor recreation in combination with effective payment mechanisms opens up new avenues for growth.

Across the state, communities are poised to capitalize on their natural resources by turning into vibrant outdoor recreation centers. The emergence of boomtowns focused on outdoor recreation provides an opportunity for additional income as communities attract residents who gravitate toward outdoor activities. From the iconic landscapes of Jackson to the hidden treasures of Lander and Lovell, Wyoming offers a variety of recreational opportunities.

Chris Perkins, vice president of program support for the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, recalls a time when politicians treated discussions about outdoor recreation with polite indifference. However, with the industry now exceeding $1.1 trillion in economic output nationwide, attitudes have changed. Perkins emphasizes the importance of combining personal anecdotes with compelling economic data to elevate outdoor recreation from luxury to necessity.

Yet amid this growth lies the looming threat of the convenience trap. Excessive demand can damage infrastructure and undermine the resources that attract visitors. Megan Lawson, Principal Research Fellow at Headwaters Economics, emphasizes the importance of strategic investment to mitigate these challenges.

The benefits of outdoor recreation go beyond economic benefits. Improving quality of life is becoming a powerful magnet for talent retention and recruitment, especially in traditionally underserved sectors in rural areas. By investing in outdoor recreation, Wyoming not only secures its economic future, but also improves the well-being of its residents.
