Transport for Wales (TfW) has announced that Ty Glas station and its adjacent level crossing will be closed from July 19, 2025, for essential upgrade works. The station closure is expected to last about 10 months, with a reopening planned for spring 2026. The improvements include extending the station platform by 16 meters and upgrading the level crossing’s safety features, which will support the introduction of new electric trains on the Coryton line.

The level crossing will also undergo significant refurbishment, including replacement of its floor and construction of a new pedestrian pathway connecting the station to the crossing. These upgrades are part of a wider £800 million investment aimed at modernizing Wales’ rail network, ensuring that the infrastructure can safely accommodate quieter and more efficient tri-mode trains.

The temporary closure of Ty Glas station and its level crossing is a necessary step in our commitment to ensuring the safety of our passengers as we prepare to introduce brand-new tri-mode trains onto the Coryton line.
Dan Tipper, Chief Infrastructure Officer at TfW

Passengers planning to visit nearby attractions such as the Parc Cefn Onn Country Park, Llandaff Cathedral, or the historic Whitchurch Golf Club may find their journeys affected during this closure. Since Ty Glas station will be out of service, reaching these places may take longer and involve more complicated routes. This is especially relevant for those relying on regular rail connections for access to the northern suburbs of Cardiff.

Commuters and visitors to other well-frequented locations like the Glamorgan Cricket Ground, Radyr Woods, and the Nant Fawr Stream Nature Reserve will also need to adjust routes. While the crossing is out of use, people on foot will be redirected to alternative ways to cross the railway. Passengers are advised to use:

  • Birchgrove station instead of Ty Glas station for boarding and alighting trains
  • Caerphilly Road Bridge for crossing the railway safely during the closure

This project highlights the ongoing commitment to upgrading rail services in South Wales. Though the works will cause some disruption, they’re expected to lead to safer tracks and a more dependable rail service in the long run. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed through Transport for Wales and adjust their travel plans to help prevent delays during the upgrade works.
