TSA Intercepts Guns and Ammunition in Checked Baggage at Pittsburgh Airport

On Friday, April 26, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) thwarted a potentially dangerous situation when officers discovered three handguns and multiple rounds of ammunition concealed within a checked bag at Pittsburgh International Airport. The alarming find led to the arrest of an Ohio man, whose luggage was destined for San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The concealed weapons, each individually wrapped in aluminum foil and hidden beneath a metal sheet inside a metal briefcase, included two 9mm handguns with a total of 70 bullets and an unloaded .40 caliber handgun. The briefcase was ingeniously tucked inside a larger suitcase, cleverly eluding initial detection.

Upon the discovery, TSA officials promptly alerted the Allegheny County Police, who responded to the scene in the TSA's checked baggage room. The police seized the briefcase and its contents, ensuring the removal of the dangerous items from airport premises. This prompt action underscores the ongoing collaboration between TSA staff and local law enforcement to maintain safety and security within the aviation environment.

Karen Keys-Turner, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport, expressed her gratitude for the vigilance of the TSA officers.
