Amid ongoing demonstrations and violence in Bangladesh, the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka has issued a demonstration alert. The Government of Bangladesh has imposed an indefinite curfew, urging everyone to stay indoors. In response to student protests against government job quotas, the authorities have deployed the army nationwide. These protests have led to violent clashes, resulting in over 150 confirmed deaths and thousands of injuries. Weapons, tear gas, and other means of suppression have been used in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy. The situation remains highly volatile and unpredictable.

Recommendations for Travelers

The U.S. Department of State has raised the travel advisory for Bangladesh to Level 4: Do Not Travel. This decision is due to civil unrest, crime, and terrorism. Travelers are advised to avoid trips to Dhaka and other regions of the country due to ongoing violence and telecommunications disruptions. The U.S. government has also authorized the voluntary departure of non-emergency personnel and their families from Bangladesh.

Crime and Terrorism

In addition to civil unrest, travelers should be cautious of crime. Major cities in Bangladesh experience petty crimes such as pickpocketing, as well as more serious offenses like muggings, burglaries, and assaults. There is also a threat of terrorist attacks in public places, including transport hubs, markets, restaurants, and government facilities.

Safety Recommendations

Travelers are advised to avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, monitor local news, and always carry a charged mobile phone for emergency communications. Do not resist any robbery attempts and report any criminal incidents to local authorities immediately.

Given the current situation in Bangladesh, travelers should carefully consider all risks and, if possible, avoid trips to the country.
