Rail union RMT recently voiced significant concerns about Trainline’s practices, alleging that the online ticketing platform frequently misleads passengers and prioritizes profit over fair service. Based on a survey of thousands of rail workers, RMT highlighted numerous issues with Trainline’s ticketing, including inflated fees, invalid tickets, and incomplete travel information, leading to frustrations and added costs for many travelers.

According to the survey, a substantial portion of Trainline customers may be left with tickets that don’t fully meet their travel needs. A vast majority of surveyed rail staff reported cases where passengers, unaware of specific ticket restrictions, had to purchase new tickets or pay penalties due to invalid bookings. Additionally, Trainline’s booking fees and the platform’s tendency to omit standard discounts like GroupSave have led to higher costs than buying tickets directly from train operators.

For travelers hoping to avoid these pitfalls, considering alternative options can be beneficial. Purchasing tickets directly from railway operators often provides access to real-time updates, exclusive discounts, and fewer fees. Travelers can also use official rail apps or websites, which typically feature more transparent pricing and detailed schedule information, helping to avoid the risks associated with third-party booking platforms.

Another key step for travelers is researching fare types and restrictions before booking. Many operators offer flexible fares, and platforms that show clear pricing comparisons may help reduce confusion. Additionally, checking for any available regional or group discounts directly with operators can ensure travelers get the best possible deal.

In light of these findings, RMT suggests that travelers could benefit from a public ticketing system that promotes transparency and consistent pricing. The proposed Great British Railways initiative would centralize ticketing, potentially offering travelers a more reliable and affordable option without the need for third-party involvement. By ensuring that ticket sales remain under public control, such a system could eliminate the current gaps in service and information that frequently trouble Trainline users.
