A section of the Milan–Domodossola railway line will be closed for three days in April due to major infrastructure works. According to Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, train traffic will be suspended between Arona and Premosello stations from 00:01 on Friday, April 25, until 23:59 on Sunday, April 27, 2025. The closure will pave way for a further phase of technological upgrade, rail system safety and performance enhancer.

The scheduled closure supports the installation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a modern signaling technology aimed at improving railway safety and efficiency. Already in use on high-speed routes, ERTMS enables better coordination of rail traffic while cutting down on maintenance costs. As part of the wider project, upgrades will also take place at Gallarate station. The total investment stands at €120 million, partly funded by Italy’s PNRR.

Travellers planning journeys along the affected corridor particularly towards Lake Maggiore or Swiss border should review their travel plans. The closure lasts a weekend so it will likely wreak havoc on local/interlocal transit plans. Though the works are scheduled in advance, affected passengers may face delays or need to seek alternative connections along other routes in the regional network.

As of now, no official details have been released regarding replacement transport such as shuttle buses or adjusted train services. Therefore, travelers are encouraged to check for live updates from Trenitalia or regional railway operators closer to the closure dates. This will help make the transition more fluid and prevent other mismatches during travel.

Although the ERTMS upgrade will provide long term advantages to Italy's rail system in safety and enhancements to rail travel, there will be no escaping the need for short term adaptations. For those planning leisure or cross-border movement, it is a lesson on infrastructure updates + flexibility needed for Europe's changing transport system.
