Passengers in Norfolk should prepare for rail service suspensions from 5 to 7 July, as lines near Wymondham station will close for infrastructure works. Greater Anglia has confirmed the installation of a new pedestrian and cycling subway under the tracks, requiring full closure of routes between Norwich and Ely, and Norwich and Thetford. Rail replacement buses will operate while work takes place, with normal service scheduled to resume on Tuesday 8 July.

Train operators will adjust services during the disruption. Greater Anglia will provide stopping buses between Norwich and Ely on 5–6 July and between Norwich and Thetford on 7 July. East Midlands Railway will offer direct buses between Norwich and Peterborough across all three days. Amended rail services will continue beyond Ely to destinations such as Cambridge, Stansted Airport, and Liverpool Lime Street. All changes are confirmed in official operator updates.

We support external projects that will benefit our local communities wherever we can, and the new subway will make a real difference to Wymondham. We’re really sorry that passengers will face disruption in July, including on a working day, but it’s fundamental to allow this scheme to move forward.
David Kang Gil, head of asset protection at Network Rail Anglia

The planned closure affects several major travel routes across East Anglia. In addition to rail changes, Station Road in Wymondham will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians from 30 June to 27 July. Diversions will be signposted. The following confirmed impacts have been announced:

  • Train connections to Cambridge and Stansted will involve transfers
  • Part of the Norwich–Liverpool route will operate by bus
  • Road access near Wymondham station will be restricted
  • Temporary walking and driving routes will be in place

While the railway is closed, Network Rail engineers will remove track sections to install concrete subway units, each weighing around 28 tonnes. During this window, crews will also perform maintenance and signalling upgrades along the affected stretch. These additional works are planned to avoid future closures and ensure the route reopens on time. No further interruption to service is announced beyond the scheduled three-day closure.

Passengers planning travel through this region in early July should check operator websites for updated timetables and allow extra time for journeys. The works coincide with summer travel, affecting both local and long-distance rail access. Details about bus replacements and route changes are already available to help travellers prepare for the temporary adjustments.
