In North Carolina, just a short drive from Charlotte and its many attractions, which often draw visitors to this part of the state, there are many small towns worthy of tourist attention.

North Carolina is known for its abundance of delicious cuisine, much of which is concentrated in and around Charlotte. However, traveling to the surrounding regions of the city offers a great opportunity to taste even more local delicacies, writes The Travel.

Gastonia

Located about 23 miles from Charlotte, Gastonia offers a number of attractions worth visiting. Tourists can delve into its textile heritage at the American Textile History Museum or enjoy the outdoors at the outdoor exhibits and trails of the Schiele Museum.

Monroe

Monroe, a short drive from Charlotte, is noted for its historical appeal. The well-preserved architecture, charming main street, and local museums provide a glimpse into history and are the main attractions of the city.

Spindale

In Spindale, brick buildings that have stood for generations show that it was a textile center in the 1900s. Today, locals call it Restaurant Row because of the many downtown dining options that include barbecue, Japanese, American pizzerias, and bistros. Bostic

The iconic gem of Bostic is the scenic South Mountains Game Lands, an outdoor paradise with 20 miles of trails for hikers, bikers, joggers, and horseback riders. Washburn's General Store, founded in 1831, is the oldest family-owned business in North Carolina and is worth a visit to learn its secret to longevity. History buffs can also visit the Bostic Lincoln Center, which displays documents that hint that Abraham Lincoln was born in Bostic, not Kentucky.

Ellenboro

Considered the most old-school of all the small towns in Rutherford County, Ellenboro has fewer than a thousand residents and is a landscape paradise. Be sure to visit Randall's Ellenboro Restaurant to enjoy delicious Southern fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock combines urban and country living. This small town is also home to the scenic Chimney Rock State Park, one of the best places for nature lovers in North Carolina. Here, visitors can hike to Stone Rock, birdwatch, go rock climbing, and have a picnic, and events such as weddings are often held in the area due to its stunning natural beauty. There are also activities for children, such as supervised rock climbing.

Rutherfordton

Founded in 1787, Rutherfordton has many interesting locations for visitors. Museums, antebellum and historic homes are now repositories of Rutherfordton's rich history. The Bechtler House was a private mint that produced more than $2 million worth of gold coins in the early 1800s, and it was here that Christopher Bechtler minted the nation's first dollar coin.

Forest City

Forest City embodies Southern charm, rich history, modernity, and country living. Residents are innovative and entrepreneurial, as evidenced by the mom-and-pop eateries, antique shops, and modern boutiques dotting the historic downtown.

Lake Lure

Visitors to Lake Lure will have plenty to do in this beautiful outdoor paradise thanks to the wonders of nature such as mountain cliffs, a tranquil lake, forest, parks, and a river. In this picturesque lake town, visitors can go hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, zip-lining, mountain biking, golfing, etc.

Ruth

Founded in 1893, Ruth is one of the smallest towns in Rutherford County and is home to the 13.58-mile Thermal Belt Rail Trail. On this lush and scenic trail, visitors can hike, bike, run, and rollerblade.

Cliffside

The origins of Cliffside date back to 1899, when Raleigh Rutherford Haynes, a textile industrialist, decided to build a town near the Second Broad River. It became a thriving textile center, and all the houses and most of the businesses here were owned by the Cone Mills Corporation. Since the 1960s, the textile industry has been in decline, and then completely collapsed, and the textile mill was closed.

Columbus

In the small, historic, and picturesque town of Columbus, visitors will find several attractions, including one of the oldest courthouses in North Carolina. The famous Flag House Museum with more than 300 flags and the Polk County History Museum are also located here.

Belmont

Another of the best small towns near Charlotte, North Carolina is Belmont. It is a charming little town with a population of just over 15,000 people. Like many small towns, Main Street is the focal point of the downtown area and the center where everything happens.

Davidson

Another of the best small towns to visit near Charlotte, North Carolina is the small college town of Davidson. It is a cute town just 20 miles north of Charlotte and is located along Lake Norman.

Pineville

South of Charlotte is another of the best small towns near Charlotte, North Carolina to visit. Explore Pineville's historic downtown and see a quaint neighborhood with restaurants and shops for everyone. Check out the town's galleries, furniture stores, local brewery, and more.

Cornelius

Cornelius is another one of the best day trips from Charlotte, North Carolina, and it's another great city located on beautiful Lake Norman. It offers a great little getaway from city life, while also offering visitors plenty of great dining options to choose from.

Tega Cay

Located just across the border in South Carolina, Tega Cay supposedly means "beautiful peninsula" in Polynesian, and visitors will quickly realize why it was given this name. Located on a peninsula east of South Carolina's Lake Wylie, it is one of many charming resort towns near Charlotte, North Carolina, which is less than an hour's drive from the city.
