The aviation industry is rebounding and expanding. Increasingly, airlines are entering the market to gain market share and generate profits.

In 2023, the airline industry saw a return to pre-COVID-19 levels of traffic and revenue. Consequently, as the industry continues to expand, more airlines are entering the competition for market share and profitability, as reported by Simple Flying.

In 2023, 20 airlines commenced operations, but only three of them remain active. Let's delve deeper into them.

The airline was established by Red Sea Global, which oversees tourist destinations in Saudi Arabia such as the Red Sea and Amaala. This newly formed airline will transport tourists to various beach resorts in Saudi Arabia.

Initially, the airline's fleet consists of four Cessna Caravan 208 seaplanes equipped with luxurious interiors. The airline plans to increase this number to nine aircraft by 2028 and 20 by 2030.

Each aircraft is operated by a single pilot and can accommodate either six guests with luggage or nine passengers during scenic tours.

Fly Red Sea is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and is transitioning its entire fleet to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Additionally, the airline is exploring the feasibility of utilizing electric aircraft and is collaborating with ZeroAvia to conduct tests on aircraft equipped with hydrogen-electric propulsion systems.

Fly Red Sea will be headquartered at the Red Sea International Airport, construction of which commenced in 2021.

Center Air is an ambitious Uzbek startup aiming to capitalize on the country's economic growth and rapidly developing aviation industry. Founded by the Uzbek cargo airline MyFreighter, it focuses on providing low-cost transportation in both domestic and international markets.

The airline is in the process of expanding its fleet. Initially, it planned to acquire 20 aircraft by the year's end, but it has yet to reach this target. The current fleet, with an average age of 20.5 years, consists of three A320-200 aircraft, two of which are operational while one is undergoing maintenance. However, there are long-term plans to expand the fleet to 100 aircraft by 2026.

In January, the airline leased two Boeing 737-800s from the Lithuanian airline GetJet Airlines, but they were returned in May. The operational A320s are leased from MyFreighter's parent company.

Based in Tashkent, the airline intends to commence flights between Uzbekistan and 15 other countries, including India, Turkey, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Initially, it will operate flights to five domestic destinations: Nukus, Urgench, Termez, Namangan, and Fergana.

Phenix Jet is a private charter airline that established its representative office in Singapore in 2023. The parent company, Phenix Jet Group, was founded in 2017 and operates in the luxury aviation sector.

The airline operates flights from the Cayman Islands and the United States, with Singapore as its third hub. The current fleet comprises two Bombardier Global 7500s, a Bombardier Global XRS, two Gulfstream G650ERs, a Gulfstream G650, and a Boeing 737-700 Business Jet.

Launching and sustaining a successful business is challenging, and starting an airline is even more so. Among the airlines that began operations in 2023, only a handful were able to acquire aircraft, and even fewer managed to commence flights. However, Uzbek airline Air Samarkand successfully took off just before the year's end, joining the modest list of active new airlines. Hopefully, others will follow suit in the coming year.
