Thailand is preparing to launch an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system for citizens of 97 countries, including the USA, UK, EU countries, Australia, and Japan. This program, expected to begin testing in December 2024, will provide travelers with a new way to enter the country.

The new system will function similarly to other countries' ETA programs. Travelers will be able to apply through the official Thai ETA website by providing basic biographical information and trip details, such as passport data, accommodation information, and flight details. However, unlike some other programs, a new application will be required for each trip to Thailand.

Convenience for Travelers

While additional paperwork might seem inconvenient, the new system promises significant improvements. By submitting information in advance, it is expected that travelers will be able to take advantage of automated passport gates at immigration. This will undoubtedly reduce waiting times upon arrival and make starting a holiday much smoother.

Another important benefit is that, as of now, there are no plans to charge travelers for submitting an application through the system.

Stay and Visa Extension Rules

For citizens of visa-exempt countries, the current rule allowing a 60-day stay in Thailand remains unchanged, with the option to extend the stay for an additional 30 days. To do this, travelers must submit form TM7 at any immigration office and pay a fee of 1,900 baht. This allows for a total stay of up to 90 days, providing ample time to fully experience Thai culture and enjoy a more immersive travel experience.

The new electronic travel authorization program will modernize and streamline the entry process for visitors to Thailand. It is expected to significantly speed up passport control and eliminate the need for filling out forms upon arrival. Travelers should stay updated on further developments to be informed about the program’s launch and any changes to entry requirements.
