From June 15 to September 8 train services on the Giulianova Teramo railway line in Abruzzo will be fully suspended to allow for extensive infrastructure and technological improvements. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana RFI is managing the project which includes renewing more than 25 kilometers of track, upgrading Teramo station and performing essential maintenance on bridges viaducts and the electrical supply system. Replacement bus services will operate along the entire route during this period to maintain connectivity for passengers.

The scope of the work is significant involving roughly 200 technicians working daily and an investment of 48 million euros. The work will see 2,800 tons of new rails put in place, along with 38,000 prestressed concrete sleepers, and over 51,000 tons of crushed stone used to form the track foundation. Teramo station will see improvements such as higher platforms to facilitate boarding new shelters, tactile pathways for visually impaired travelers and better access points all aimed at enhancing passenger safety and comfort.

Visitors heading to popular spots along this route should be prepared for some difficulties while the suspension is in effect. Access to Giulianova Lido’s beaches, the archaeological area of Atri and the central Piazza Martiri della Libertà in Teramo will be affected as replacement buses typically have longer travel times and fewer stops than trains. Visitors relying on public transport will need to allow extra time for these journeys or consider alternative travel arrangements.

Other notable destinations affected include Gran Sasso National Park, famed for its scenic landscapes and hiking routes, the medieval town of Campli with its ancient churches, and the coastal resort of Roseto degli Abruzzi. With fewer public transit options available, travelers should look up schedules ahead of time and be ready for potential delays while the work is underway. Replacement bus services will cover the route but often take longer and may have fewer stops than the train.

While the temporary closure will cause some inconvenience it is an important step toward modernizing the Giulianova Teramo rail line. The improvements promise more reliable punctual and comfortable train services in the future benefiting both daily commuters and tourists. With construction underway, it’s a good idea for travelers to plan ahead, keep an eye on any changes, and stay flexible in case schedules shift during the summer.
