Major roadworks will take place on the A16 and A13 motorways during September and October, affecting journeys to and from Rotterdam The Hague Airport. On the A16, one direction will be fully closed between Terbregseplein and Ridderkerk junctions on:

  • 19–22 September (Fri 20:00 – Mon 05:00)
  • 26–29 September (Fri 20:00 – Mon 05:00)
  • 3–6 October (Fri 20:00 – Mon 05:00, parallel carriageway open from Kralingen (26) exit)

Additional closures will follow in October:

  • 10–13 October (Fri 20:00 – Mon 05:00): A16 main road closed between Terbregseplein and Ridderkerk
  • 17–20 October (Fri 22:00 – Mon 05:00): A16 parallel carriageway closed between Terbregseplein and Ridderkerk

Drivers should note that on-ramps, off-ramps, and connecting roads may shut up to an hour earlier than listed. Authorities recommend allowing 30–60 minutes of extra travel time.

Two weekends will also see simultaneous closures on both the A16 and A13:

3–6 October:

  • A16 between Terbregseplein ↔ Ridderkerk
  • A13 between Delft Zuid ↔ Kleinpolderplein

24–27 October:

  • A16 between Ridderkerk ↔ Terbregseplein
  • A13 between Kleinpolderplein ↔ Delft Zuid

These combined works are expected to lead to heavier traffic and longer travel times between Rotterdam, Delft, and The Hague.

Many travellers could find it easier to take public transport or follow an alternate route. Trains and buses run frequently between Rotterdam, Delft, and The Hague, offering convenient access to the airport. You could even make a quick stop in Schiedam or Delft, stroll the old streets, and enjoy a coffee before continuing your trip. Drivers might also think about leaving a bit earlier or skipping the busiest hours to avoid queues.

These closures are part of regular upgrades on two of the busiest roads in the region. Work includes laying new road surfaces and fixing junctions, so some hold-ups are likely. If you are using a sat-nav, save the route in advance - some apps update slowly when a road is completely closed. The works will take a few weekends, but after that traffic should move more freely on these routes. Airport drop-off zones remain open, and taxi ranks and car-rental returns operate normally; just allow a little extra queue time.
