Those planning to travel on Southeastern and Southern trains between Tunbridge Wells, Hastings, and Bexhill should expect major disruptions from October 25 to November 2, 2025. Throughout this time, train services between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings, as well as between Bexhill and Hastings, will be suspended for essential engineering work. Bus services will substitute trains along these sections, while a shuttle train will operate between Ashford and Hastings. Travelers should stay updated on service changes and plan for longer journey times.

This maintenance work is designed to boost the safety and dependability of the railway through a series of essential tasks:

  • Repairing tunnel brickwork and improving drainage systems to prevent water damage;
  • Replacing worn rails, sleepers, and ballast along the track;
  • Clearing vegetation and strengthening embankments to reduce the risk of landslips;
  • Refurbishing passenger facilities, including the footbridge at West St Leonards station to maintain safe access.

This disruption will impact access to several notable attractions in the region. Accessing the coastal walking routes at Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve may become more complicated for visitors as train services are suspended and replaced by slower buses. Similarly, tourists hoping to visit the famous Hastings Pier for its scenic views and local events should be aware that their journey could take longer than usual. Visitors hoping to explore the Seven Sisters Cliffs near Eastbourne could experience delays or difficulties as train services in the area are disrupted.

Another destination potentially more difficult to access is Bodiam Castle, a medieval moated fortress near Robertsbridge, celebrated for its charming landscape and historical importance. The Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, a key spot for birdwatching and coastal walks, is also in the area served by the disrupted routes. Camber Sands beach, with its extensive sand dunes and water activities, is accessible via rail links that will be impacted during the upgrade period.

We’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we carry out this essential work. We know that closures are disruptive, and we’re doing everything we can to keep people moving with replacement buses and clear travel information. Getting work done over consecutive days allow us to do more work, more efficiently.
David Davidson, chief operating officer for the South Eastern Railway

Temporary service disruptions on Southeastern and Southern lines are expected due to vital railway improvements, impacting access to various nearby natural and historic sites. Travelers are advised to plan ahead, explore other transportation options, and stay informed through official channels to minimize inconvenience. Short-term inconvenience is possible, yet these improvements play a key role in making train journeys safer and more consistent down the line.
