On Sunday, February 16, 2025, train services between Bolzano and Bressanone will be suspended from 9:00 AM to noon for the removal of an unexploded World War II bomb. The disposal operation will begin at 9:00 AM, with sirens signaling the start and completion of the process. Authorities expect the operation to conclude by noon, but delays are possible depending on the complexity of the procedure. Travelers planning to use this route should expect disruptions and consider alternative transportation options.

The ordnance was discovered earlier in the week during construction in the industrial area of Bressanone Sud. Following military protocols, disposal will take place during daylight hours to reduce risk. Experts will neutralize the device at the site before moving it to a controlled location for detonation. The Civil Protection Agency, in coordination with government authorities, has planned the operation meticulously to ensure the least possible impact on residents and travelers.

Beyond railway suspensions, a security perimeter will be established, requiring the evacuation of approximately 500 residents. The evacuation process will start at 7:30 AM and must be completed by 8:45 AM. Electricity within a 250-meter radius will be turned off at 8:30 AM as a precaution. Key roads—including the Brenner Highway between Bressanone/Varna and Chiusa/Val Gardena—will be closed from 8:30 AM until the operation is complete. These measures aim to minimize risks and ensure a smooth disposal process. Tourists and local commuters should prepare for possible detours and roadblocks during this period.

Authorities are asking travelers to be vigilant and plan their journeys as such. RFI will publish updates via her official communication channels: website and customer service desks. There will be delays however alternative arrangements in transport are possible. Tourists heading anywhere in that area should be aware that hiking and cycling routes are closed temporarily as well.

These safety precautions are inconvenient, but necessary. People who keep on top of news and are able to change their schedules accordingly will have less chaos in pursuing travel. If you have any time sensitive plans better relook alternative transit routes for your journey. Flexibility and awareness will help ease the temporary pain of this disruption.
