Is Morocco Still Safe After the Ceuta Crisis?

Travel to Morocco’s main holiday cities is continuing despite the deadly border crisis in Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on the country’s northern coast. Tens of thousands of people crossed into Ceuta from Morocco, prompting Spain to deploy troops and police. The UK Foreign Office has not advised against visiting Morocco, and the unrest remains concentrated around the border rather than the country’s leading tourist destinations.

What Holidaymakers Need to Know

  • Area affected: Ceuta and the nearby Moroccan border
  • Current UK advice: No warning against travel to Morocco
  • Main tourist cities: Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca and Agadir remain outside the affected area
  • Closest major hub: Tangier
  • Flights: Major services are largely operating
  • Cancellations: Standard provider terms apply
  • Insurance: Safety concerns alone may not trigger cover
  • Action: Check airline and local updates before departure

Spain says around 50,000 people entered Ceuta during the surge, while more than 48,000 returned to Morocco within 48 hours. At least 67 deaths have been confirmed. Spanish authorities have installed a floating barrier and kept reinforcements in place, although overnight crossings had fallen to almost zero by 1 August. Officials say the situation is calmer, but the crisis has not been formally declared over.

Most visitors heading to Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca, Agadir or the Atlas Mountains will not pass near Ceuta. Tangier is the closest major tourist city, so travellers using northern road routes should follow local updates more closely. The medinas of Marrakech and Fez, Casablanca’s Hassan II Mosque, Agadir’s beaches and trips into the Atlas remain accessible under current advice, provided transport operators confirm normal services.

A holiday elsewhere in Morocco does not need to be cancelled solely because of events at the Ceuta border. The sensible response is to avoid the crossing area, monitor official advice and check flights before departure. Anyone choosing to cancel without a government warning may have to rely on flexible booking terms, as tour operators and insurers are not normally required to refund a trip based only on personal concern.
