Rail and Road Works Bring Delays for Lake Como Visitors

RFI is continuing major works on the Lecco–Tirano railway as the Bellano level crossing is replaced with a new vehicle and pedestrian underpass, a change that directly affects how travellers move through the eastern side of Lake Como. The project, developed with local authorities, reshapes an important transit point used by residents and tourists. During the closure of the railway in 2025, engineers completed the construction of a canopy over the underground passage and carried out underground work that required the complete suspension of train traffic for safety reasons.

The wider redesign includes road widening, curve adjustments and improved access roads, all of which may influence how visitors reach Bellano’s centre or continue toward nearby destinations. A new pedestrian ramp will eventually ease movement between the town and the station, though travellers may face temporary barriers until completion. Works are scheduled to resume in spring and continue until 2027, funded primarily by RFI with contributions from the Municipality of Bellano and ANAS.

Travellers should expect noticeable disruptions as construction progresses near the former crossing. Roadworks may cause slow traffic, alternating one-way systems and occasional closures, especially during weekends or high-season travel periods. Drivers using the SS 754 or SP 72 routes may experience longer travel times due to traffic queues and machinery blocking sections of the road. Pedestrians may also encounter inconvenient detours around fenced-off areas, which will lengthen short walks and make it more difficult to navigate the terrain.

Rail passengers passing through Bellano may face further inconvenience as the station area remains partially affected by ongoing work. Limited platform access, modified entry points and temporary signage can slow movement between trains, buses and ferries. If additional track adjustments are required, short-term timetable changes or brief replacement services may occur. Visitors unfamiliar with the area may find navigation more difficult, particularly when carrying luggage or trying to coordinate onward connections efficiently.

These construction phases mean that travelers should be prepared for less predictable routes and unexpected delays.Temporary shifts in traffic patterns, altered footpaths and continuous activity around the railway zone are likely to influence how people move through Bellano on a daily basis. Even though the project aims to improve circulation once everything is finished, for now travellers will need to stay adaptable to frequent adjustments. Checking for updated travel information, allowing extra time, and planning alternative routes will help visitors avoid unnecessary stress and ensure smoother journeys during this extended period of construction.
