Anyone traveling through Surrey and Hampshire is advised to allow extra time, as rail and road closures will disrupt journeys between Guildford and Portsmouth from 27 September to 13 November. Network Rail is finalising a key upgrade on the Portsmouth Direct Line, designed to modernise signalling and strengthen operational dependability. Passengers should anticipate timetable changes and possible delays, particularly over weekends and during the extended closure in late October.

Train services will experience several scheduled closures as part of the ongoing upgrade, with signalling control between Farncombe and Petersfield being moved to the Basingstoke Railway Operating Centre (ROC). The planned closures are as follows:

  • Weekend closures between Guildford and Havant: 27 to 28 September, 4 to 5 October, 11 to 12 October, and 18 to 19 October
  • A longer nine-day closure: 25 October to 2 November

Passengers are encouraged to review updated timetables ahead of travel and allow additional time for journeys, as services may be adjusted while essential testing and commissioning work is carried out.

“We appreciate that there is never a good time to close the railway and we’re sorry for the disruption this will cause. However, these closures are essential to complete the vital upgrade of the Portsmouth Direct line."
Speaking on behalf of Network Rail and South Western Railway, Mark Goodall, Wessex Route Director

Road access to popular outdoor destinations will also be affected. Travelers visiting the South Downs Way walking trail, the dramatic Devil’s Punch Bowl, or the scenic Hinton Ampner estate should expect delays due to nine level crossings undergoing upgrades. The work includes adding obstacle detection technology, CCTV oversight, and updated footpath crossings. Closures will be staggered to reduce disruption, but travelers should allow extra time when arriving at these sites. Staff will be on site around the clock to maintain safety during the works.

Additional temporary delays are expected near Selborne’s natural heritage trails, the countryside around Liss Forest, and the Trotton Hill viewpoint. Some level crossings may experience slightly longer barrier downtimes, but the work is intended to improve safety and dependability for both train travelers and motorists. Although travelers may face occasional detours and small delays, the improvements are expected to provide more reliable and safer journeys along the Portsmouth Direct Line over time.

People traveling through the area should plan their journeys carefully and allow extra time when passing through affected zones. Once complete, these signalling and level crossing upgrades will provide safer, more reliable train services and improved road safety for commuters and tourists alike. The works represent a strategic investment in travel infrastructure that benefits everyone, from daily commuters to weekend explorers, making journeys across Surrey and Hampshire more predictable and secure.
