London’s Piccadilly line will face a new round of planned closures from 18 September as Transport for London continues work on its £3.4 billion upgrade. The first shutdown affects the Night Tube between Hyde Park Corner and Northfields, followed by wider weekend closures across central and west London. The works are preparing the line for a new fleet of 94 trains, with the first expected to enter service between December 2026 and June 2027.

What to Check Before You Travel

  • 18 September Night Tube: Hyde Park Corner–Northfields closed.
  • 19–20 September: Hyde Park Corner–Acton Town closed.
  • 25 September Night Tube: Cockfosters–Acton Town closed.
  • 26–27 September: Cockfosters–Uxbridge closed.
  • 16–18 October: Hammersmith–Heathrow and Uxbridge closed.
  • 28–30 October: Cockfosters–Uxbridge closed.
  • 30 October–1 November: no Night Tube service across the entire line.
  • 20–22 November: Hammersmith–Heathrow and Uxbridge closed.
  • Heathrow trips: compare the Elizabeth line and other alternatives in TfL Journey Planner.
  • Recheck the route before travelling, especially for airport and late-night connections.

The closures are part of TfL’s £3.4 billion Piccadilly line upgrade, combining new trains with work on ageing infrastructure. Tracks, power supplies, platforms, depots, signalling and CCTV are being upgraded so the new fleet can operate safely on a line where some assets are more than a century old. Work has already been completed at 119 Piccadilly line platforms to accommodate the longer trains and their different door positions.

The 94 new trains will replace the existing fleet, which has been in service since 1975. They will have walk-through carriages, air-conditioning, wider double doors and digital information screens, with around 10 per cent more capacity per train. Once the full fleet is operating, TfL plans to increase peak frequency through central London from 24 to 27 trains an hour, raising peak capacity by up to 23 per cent.

The first weekend is more awkward because the Piccadilly closure overlaps with District line engineering on 19–20 September, when no District service is planned between Earl’s Court and Ealing Broadway or Richmond. That removes one obvious west-London alternative. Heathrow-bound passengers should therefore check TfL Journey Planner rather than relying on a simple Tube swap; the Elizabeth line remains another rail option, but fares and journey times differ.
