Passengers traveling from Perth Airport (PER) on Friday night and Saturday morning faced significant disruptions due to a fuel supply issue, resulting in the cancellation of approximately 70 flights. The problem left many travelers stranded and caused some flights to be diverted to regional airports.

Issue Resolved But Disruptions Continue

Perth Airport authorities reported that the refueling issue, which was caused by an outage due to low pressure in the system, has been resolved. External experts, including engineers and technicians, were enlisted to diagnose and fix the problem. Despite this, the airport continues to face disruptions, with many arriving and departing flights experiencing delays.

Impact on Passengers

The fuel supply failure affected at least 70 domestic and international flights, leaving passengers stranded at various airports. Some passengers were stuck on planes for hours, such as those on a domestic flight from Perth to Sydney (SYD), where they waited for two hours before the flight was eventually canceled. Others, like those waiting in Doha (DOH) for a connecting flight to Perth, also faced long delays.

Disruption Indices

According to data from Flightradar24.com, the current arrival disruption index at PER stands at four, indicating major problems with long delays and several canceled flights. The departure disruption index is at 3.1, suggesting minor problems with some delays or a few cancellations. These indices range from 0 to 5, with higher values indicating greater disruption.

Airline Responses

Virgin Australia acknowledged the refueling issue, stating it impacted all carriers at Perth Airport. A spokesperson mentioned that the airline proactively informed affected passengers and apologized for the inconvenience. Virgin Australia also outlined its Guest Compensation Policy, which includes options for other flights, travel credits, or refunds.

Qantas, on the other hand, stated that all its passengers had been accommodated on flights scheduled for the afternoon or the following morning. Despite the assurances, many passengers remained frustrated with the overall handling of the situation.

In Conclusion

While Perth Airport has resolved the initial refueling issue, the ripple effects of the disruption continue to affect flight schedules. Passengers are advised to check for real-time updates from airlines and the airport to stay informed about their travel plans.
