Train passengers planning to travel through Norfolk in early July should expect delays due to scheduled rail works in Wymondham. From Saturday 5 to Monday 7 July, no trains will run between Norwich and Ely, with replacement buses in operation. The disruption is tied to the installation of a pedestrian and cyclist subway beneath the railway, near Station Road in Wymondham.

The service suspension will affect routes connecting Norwich with Cambridge, Stansted Airport, and Liverpool Lime Street. Travellers should prepare for changes to their usual journeys, particularly on Monday 7 July when regular commuting resumes after the weekend. The following temporary arrangements have been confirmed:

  • On 5 and 6 July, Greater Anglia will replace trains between Norwich and Ely with bus services
  • On 7 July, buses will run between Norwich and Thetford, where train services will resume
  • East Midlands Railway will offer direct buses between Norwich and Peterborough across all three days
  • Westbound services beyond Ely, including trains to Liverpool Lime Street, will follow a revised timetable

The construction involves lifting heavy concrete sections into place after removing track and excavating beneath the line. Additional engineering tasks, including signalling upgrades, will take place at the same time. Station Road in Wymondham will also be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 30 June to 27 July, further complicating access to the station for local travellers and visitors.

If you're catching a train during this stretch, especially with flights to think about, don’t expect your usual schedule to go smoothly. Longer connection times, potential delays, and unfamiliar transfers could impact travel schedules. It’s advisable to consult updated timetables and plan alternative routes in advance. Monday 7 July might feel like rush hour turned up a notch, with more people on the move and fewer trains to catch.

We’d like to thank everybody affected by these works for their patience while this key phase of construction is carried out. Once complete, the new subway will considerably enhance accessibility from Wymondham town centre to the train station for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, facilitating huge improvements for the wider community.
Verity Macey, Managing Director at Vistry Central Home Counties

Even if it’s just for a few days, this kind of travel shake-up shows how tricky it can be to keep people moving when big construction projects get underway. The new walkway might make things easier down the line, but for now, it’s train passengers who are dealing with the detours and confusion. For visitors passing through East Anglia in July, flexibility and awareness will be key to avoiding missed connections or extended delays.
