JW Marriott has officially opened its first Mediterranean beachfront resort on the island of Crete, near the town of Chania in the Marathi region. The resort spans over 100 acres along the Aegean coast and includes 160 accommodations, such as rooms, suites, and villas, some with private pools. Created to integrate with the landscape and reflect local customs, the development invites guests to immerse themselves in the island’s heritage and natural beauty.

The architecture by Block722, a firm from Athens, blends smoothly with the natural surroundings and focuses on using sustainable building methods. Natural materials including marble and wood were used, along with planted green roofs to blend the structures into the surroundings. The grounds are landscaped with native olive and carob trees. The resort uses eco-friendly technologies like solar panels, geothermal systems, heat recovery units, and water recycling for irrigation, keeping up with modern sustainable tourism practices.

Guests staying at the resort have convenient access to several notable natural and cultural attractions. Samaria Gorge, located nearby and known for its hiking paths and rugged landscapes, continues to attract many outdoor lovers. Elafonissi Beach, known for its unique pink sand and crystal-clear waters, along with Balos Lagoon, famous for its shallow turquoise bays, are both just a short drive away, providing great spots for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring.

For visitors interested in botany and traditional rural life, the Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete provide a peaceful setting to learn about local plant species. The village of Vamos, close by, provides a glimpse into genuine Cretan village life, with walking trails and the chance to enjoy local food. The coastal area offers many activities like sailing, snorkeling, and boat tours which let visitors enjoy the beauty of the Aegean Sea and its shoreline.

The opening of this resort reflects a broader trend in Mediterranean tourism focused on sustainable growth and authentic cultural experiences. Efforts to grow Crete’s tourism sector are reinforcing its appeal as a place where sustainability and cultural identity go hand in hand with modern hospitality. This strategy aligns with a broader movement in the travel sector toward combining quality service with authentic, purpose-driven experiences.
