Italy’s railway system will face significant disruption on Tuesday, October 21, as a 24-hour national strike affects rail infrastructure services. Several trade unions that represent workers at Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the company in charge of keeping tracks, stations, and signal systems in good shape, called for the protest. The action comes after unions say that safety issues, staffing levels, and workload concerns have gotten worse in recent months.

Although the strike does not include train drivers or conductors, the absence of maintenance and signaling staff could cause widespread cancellations and delays. The Ministry of Transport confirmed that essential regional services will only operate during commuter hours, from 06:00 to 09:00 and again between 18:00 and 21:00. Outside these periods, most regional and intercity routes are expected to experience disruptions or reduced frequency.

Travelers planning to move around Italy by rail on Tuesday are advised to verify their train’s status before departure through official websites or operator apps. Those heading to airports, especially Rome Fiumicino, should prepare for possible interruptions on train connections linking city centers and airport terminals. Officials warn that there may be heavy traffic and long waiting times, especially during rush hour and nighttime travel.

If you have flexible plans, you should travel during the guaranteed service windows or use other modes of transportation, like long-distance buses, car rentals, or domestic flights. If a train is canceled or delayed, passengers can get their money back or rebook, but they should expect delays in the processing of these requests. Tourists who want to travel between big cities like Milan, Florence, and Naples should plan ahead and keep an eye on the news all day.

The strike highlights the growing tensions in Italy's rail sector and how this is affecting the country's mobility. For travelers, it is a reminder of the importance of being flexible and prepared for transportation issues. Stay up to date with the latest news through official railway channels and allow extra time for your journey to reduce the inconvenience caused by nationwide strikes, which continue to make Italy's transport system unreliable.
