Michelin Chefs Reveal Their Favorite Affordable UK Eateries

Throughout 2024, Michelin-starred chefs and top bloggers are selecting their favorite affordable dining spots across the UK, highlighting eateries where a meal for two costs less than £40. Each week, a new recommendation is added to this growing list.

 

Tom De Keyser, head chef at The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, praises The Cedar Marlow for its fantastic coffee and delightful lunch options. His family favorites include the pastrami bagel, chicken shawarma salad, and scrambled eggs for under £40. Sarah Haywood from The Coach in Marlow recommends The Butcher's Tap and Grill for pub snacks, burgers, or special cuts like pork tomahawk, expertly cooked.

 

In Cornwall, Bradley Monk from One Fish Street loves Roundhouse in Penzance for its incredible focaccia sandwiches and Blas in St Ives for its delicious rotisserie chicken.

Cumbria's Ollie Bridgwater, executive chef at SOURCE, favors Homeground in Windermere for brunch and Toast for their unique toasted sandwiches made with freshly baked Shokupan bread. The Brown Horse Inn in Winster is a highly recommended pub known for its local produce and welcoming atmosphere.

 

Devon's Simon Hulstone from The Elephant suggests Jun Jaow Thai restaurant in Torquay for authentic Thai cuisine. Gareth Bartram from Humberside's Hope and Anchor in South Ferriby enjoys the home-cured charcuterie and the incredible burger. Lisa Goodwin-Allen of Lancashire's Northcote recommends Jungle in Clitheroe for its brunch and relaxed atmosphere.

 

In London, Sameer Taneja from Benares loves The Kati Roll Company for Kolkata-inspired wraps, while Tom Brown from Cornerstone favors Max's Sandwich Shop and House of Momo for delicious, affordable meals. David Moore from Pied à Terre highlights Tongue and Brisket for generous portions and Shoop for tasty soups and falafel. Andy Beynon from Behind enjoys Lahore Kebab House and Dom's Subs for their flavorful offerings.

 

Chef Jeff Tan recommends dim sum at Orient London, Bun House, or Golden Dragon for a traditional Chinese lunch within budget. Mark Birchall from Moor Hall in Merseyside praises Swan fish and chip restaurant in Southport for family meals and Five Guys for great burgers. Galton Blackiston of Morston Hall in Norfolk enjoys Allium in Downham Market and Bure River Restaurant for their local cuisine.

 

Stephen Toman from Ox in Belfast likes Robert Stewart's for pub grub and Ora for small plates and cocktails. Tom Kitchin from The Kitchin in Edinburgh recommends The Fishmarket for classic fish and chips. Glasgow food blogger Pam Gilmour highlights Ramen Dayo for ramen, La Pastina for sandwiches, and El Perro Negro for burgers.

 

Dan Conlon from Rafters in Sheffield suggests Paesani for wood-fired pizzas, Nottingham House for homemade pies, and Urban Choola for inventive curries. Tom Shepherd from Upstairs in Lichfield loves The Patty Freaks for burgers and Bore Street Bakery for pastries. Dave Wall from The Unruly Pig in Suffolk recommends Honey + Harvey for brunch and Lark for small plates.

 

In Wales, Mark McHugo from Chapters in Hay-on-Wye recommends Daphnes in Presteigne for pizza and The Castle in Hay-on-Wye for great lunches. Simon Carlo from the Meat and One Veg blog in the West Midlands favors Yikouchi for Sichuan food, WokChi for Cantonese dishes, and Shababs for their signature chicken balti.
