Maastricht Aachen Airport has marked a milestone with the launch of its first direct route to Bosnia and Herzegovina, operated by Wizz Air. The new Maastricht–Tuzla connection, now the only nonstop link between the two countries, landed for the first time on Thursday evening. The airline will fly twice a week on Mondays and Fridays, with an extra Wednesday service added until 7 January due to holiday demand.

The route signals the start of a wider partnership between the regional airport and Wizz Air. The arrival of the first flight was celebrated at the terminal, attended by Wizz Air representatives and the Honorary Consul of Hungary. Airport management described the cooperation as an important step in strengthening Maastricht’s international position and supporting long-term plans to grow passenger numbers and develop the airport into a sustainable regional hub by 2030.

Wizz Air noted that Maastricht Aachen Airport is a valuable addition to its network and highlighted the potential of improved links between the Netherlands and Eastern and Central Europe. The airline plans to add six more routes from April 2026, giving people with family links in the region easier ways to travel and offering new options for those interested in visiting less familiar destinations. The airline plans to serve the routes with Airbus A321neo aircraft, which produce lower emissions and noise.

The expanded network will cover Katowice, Lublin, Bucharest, Chisinau, and Podgorica, alongside the new Tuzla route, giving passengers more direct access to a range of Eastern European cities. These cities offer a mix of cultural heritage, historic districts, and growing tourism scenes, providing more choice for those travelling to visit relatives or seeking lesser-known breaks beyond Western Europe. The addition of sixteen weekly flights in the summer schedule also makes planning multi-city trips across Eastern Europe more straightforward.

The launch strengthens Maastricht Aachen Airport’s role in the region, offering direct links that until now required a transfer. The new routes make it easier to reach parts of Eastern and Central Europe and widen the airport’s role for people who rely on simple connections. With Wizz Air planning further expansion and using quieter, more efficient aircraft, the airport is set to grow steadily. For many passengers, this creates a straightforward entry point to destinations that were not as easy to reach before.
