Beginning mid-January of the coming year, ITA Airways will launch a direct flight route connecting Rome Fiumicino and Tripoli Mitiga. With flights operating twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays, this route aims to provide a convenient travel option between Italy and Libya, marking the first direct air link between these two cities in recent years. This effort has been facilitated by Italian and Libyan authorities, along with support from government offices, to enhance air connectivity and support Italian businesses active in Libya.

Flights will depart from Rome in the morning, reaching Tripoli around midday, with the return leg taking off from Tripoli in the early afternoon and landing in Rome shortly after. This new route represents a significant step toward reconnecting Italy with North Africa, particularly in the context of commercial and cultural exchanges. ITA Airways’ expansion reflects a strategy to meet the travel needs of Italian professionals and leisure travelers alike.

For travelers, Libya offers a range of fascinating destinations that are now more accessible with this direct connection. Tripoli itself boasts several unique attractions, including the Red Castle Museum, which houses rich collections of Libyan artifacts, and the bustling Medina, where travelers can explore traditional markets filled with local crafts, spices, and textiles. For history enthusiasts, the ancient ruins of Leptis Magna, a UNESCO World Heritage site located near Tripoli, offer an impressive glimpse into Roman-era North Africa.

Beyond Tripoli, other Libyan sites, such as the archaeological treasures of Sabratha and the scenic beaches along the Mediterranean coast, provide rich experiences for travelers interested in exploring North African history and landscapes. The convenience of a direct flight makes it easier for tourists to discover these lesser-known yet culturally significant destinations, which are gradually opening up to international visitors.

This route’s launch marks a return to a sense of normalcy for Italian travelers and businesses engaging with Libya, after years of limited air travel options. For those seeking a blend of historical exploration and cultural experiences in North Africa, the direct flight opens up new opportunities to visit Tripoli and beyond without the need for lengthy connections.
