The National Park Service is offering a unique opportunity for history enthusiasts by leasing the renowned Michael Bushman and John Slyder houses on the Gettysburg battlefield for overnight stays, commencing on May 24.

The Bushman house, dating back to 1808, presents a two-story stone structure with a brick addition. Notably, during the Civil War, it served as a strategic location for Confederate General John Bell Hood's assault on July 2, 1863. Following a meticulous restoration in 2017, the house, previously available for overnight accommodations, is reintroduced to visitors.

The high-season rate, applicable from May to October, for this three-bedroom, 1.5-bath residence with a fully equipped kitchen, is set at $400 per night. Additionally, it will be open for stays in November and December at $325 per night.

Situated at the foot of Big Round Top, the Slyder house, constructed in 1852, features a loft bedroom furnished with two queen beds, along with a bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen. Priced at $200 per night during the high season and $165 in November and December, this house offers a more modest yet historically rich accommodation option.

"These historic homes offer our visitors an extraordinary chance to immerse themselves in the battlefield's rich history," remarked Kristina Heister, superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park.

This rental home initiative, spanning a three-year pilot period, not only provides visitors with a unique lodging experience but also contributes to the preservation and upkeep of the park's invaluable historic structures. By participating in this program, guests actively support the maintenance and restoration efforts of Gettysburg's iconic landmarks.
