Hamburg’s Central District to Get New Scandic Hotel by 2028

Scandic Hotels has signed a long-term lease for a new hotel in the center of Hamburg that will open in 2028. The hotel will have about 328 rooms and will be part of a big city project near the main train station. This development is designed to revitalize the area by integrating offices, restaurants, event venues and hotels, reflecting Hamburg’s broader effort to modernize its central transportation and business district.

The new project supports Scandic’s strategy to increase its capacity by about 15,000 rooms across Europe by 2030. Positioned next to the central bus terminal and several public transport lines, the hotel will be easily accessible to travellers arriving by train or bus. It also complements Scandic’s two other Hamburg locations, including the existing Scandic Emporio and the upcoming property near Berliner Tor station.

The hotel’s location in the St. Georg district places guests close to several well-known attractions. Lange Reihe, one of the city’s liveliest streets, is home to international restaurants, independent cafés and small boutiques. The historic Hansa Theater, just a short walk away, remains one of Germany’s oldest variety venues, offering cabaret and performance shows that preserve a piece of Hamburg’s cultural past within a fast-changing city centre.

Only a few minutes north of the site lies the Außenalster lake, a popular spot for walking, running and sailing. The surrounding parkland provides open green space with views of Hamburg’s skyline, offering a quiet contrast to the nearby transport hub. Art lovers can visit Koppel 66, a former industrial site converted into a creative hub, home to studios, workshops, and exhibitions showcasing local craftsmanship and contemporary design.

The new Scandic hotel is a sign of Hamburg's ongoing efforts to improve its downtown area and boost the city's growing tourism and hospitality industry.
