Hamburg Airport will temporarily close its runway 15/33 (Norderstedt/Alsterdorf) from 15 to 26 September 2025. During this period, all departures and arrivals will be redirected via Niendorf and Langenhorn. The closure forms part of the airport’s annual maintenance programme, aimed at ensuring flight operations remain safe and efficient. Shorter one-day closures will also continue throughout the year when required by EU safety standards.

Work planned includes removing rubber deposits from touchdown zones, clearing drainage systems, refreshing runway markings, and testing lights and electrical systems. By carrying out these tasks together, the airport reduces the overall downtime. Officials stress that passenger safety is the main priority, with these checks essential to keeping the runway fit for daily use.

In May this year, work was carried out on Hamburg Airport’s other main runway, 05/23, with flights redirected in the opposite direction. Alternating the closures helps the airport avoid long periods without access and guarantees that one runway is always available. The airport recorded over 3.2 million passengers in 2024 and expects this to rise to about 3.4 million in 2025, showing why regular maintenance is necessary.

From 15 to 26 September, all flights will use alternative routes while Runway 15/33 is closed. Residents near Niendorf and Langenhorn may hear more aircraft during the closure, while passengers might see slight changes to flight times, especially at busy hours. If you're traveling then, plan to get to the airport a little earlier, keep an eye on your airline's messages, and be ready for some flights to run behind schedule. These precautions will help avoid unnecessary stress and make your journey smoother.

The closure demonstrates the ongoing challenge airports face in balancing top-tier safety, reliable operations, and the impact on their local community. Travellers may notice some minor changes, but the maintenance work is meant to keep flights secure and reliable. Hamburg Airport has said it will post regular updates on its website so both passengers and locals can stay informed and adjust their plans.
